經。須菩提至釋迦牟尼　贊曰。下別成中展轉釋疑文下有六。一無法得受記。二真如不可說。三佛不得菩提。四遮正增減執。五真如惠信法。六安立第一義。初中又二。初返釋後順成。此初也。菩提若實是可得者。我於彼時實行勝行。應於彼時便得正覺。然燈便不與我授記。以於彼時便應得故。釋迦牟尼此云能寧。既自能寧能寧他故。

Sūtra: "Subhūti, if there were a dharma... ['You shall in a future life become a Buddha named] Śākyamuni.'" / Commentary: Below, within the distinct confirmation, he resolves doubts step by step; the text below has six points: 1. No dharma attains a prediction; 2. Tathatā cannot be spoken; 3. The Buddha does not attain bodhi; 4. Refuting the correct view of increase and decrease attachments; 5. Tathatā as the dharma of faithful understanding; 6. Establishing the ultimate truth. Within the first point there are also two parts: first, a reverse explanation, and then a direct confirmation. This is the first. If bodhi were truly something attainable, then when I performed superior practice at that time, I should have attained right awakening then and there, and Dīpaṃkara would not have given me a prediction, because at that time I ought to have already attained it. 'Śākyamuni' is translated here as 'Able to be Peaceful': since he is able to pacify himself, he is able to pacify others.
