Sūtra: “The Buddha said, ‘Excellent, … to all the bodhisattvas.’”
Commentary: Next below, the Tathāgata confirms and initiates. Within this there are three [sections]: first, stating the verification and confirmation; second, commanding them to listen and promising to expound; third, properly initiating. This is the first.
Repeating the words “Excellent, [excellent]”: The Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra says that this shows the Buddha's extreme delight. What Subhūti presented has two points: First, what was praised matched [the Buddha's] virtues, because mindfulness and protection and entrustment matched the Buddha's virtues. Since it praised the Buddha and simultaneously revealed the sūtra's doctrine—that the gotra is not interrupted—the purport is profound and far-reaching, truly being “excellent.” Second, what was asked matched the capacity and stages, for cultivation and subduing exhaustively gather all practices, matching what those of great capacity and gotra should aspire to learn and evoking the marks of practicing practice; therefore, it is also “excellent.” Because what was praised and what was asked matched the virtues and matched the capacities, deeply approving his words, he repeatedly praised and confirmed it. The text of the confirmation and recounting is easy to understand.
