Sūtra: “Why is this?”
Commentary: Next below, the second part resolves this doubt and difficulty to exhort and encourage them to cultivate it. In this there are two: first the inquiry, then the explanation. This is the inquiry. Because bodhisattvas have marks in their minds, they crave merit and doubt whether markless giving has any merit, feeling unable to take delight in markless practice. Now the Buddha, wishing to sever their doubtful minds so that they may take delight in cultivating markless practice, makes an inquiry based on their doubtful thoughts, saying: “Practicing giving is done to abide in fields of merit; now having them not abide, why is this? If one does not maintain marks of giving, how could there be merit?”
