Sūtra: At that time, [...] such a sūtra. / Commentary: This is Subhūti's sorrowful response. Having heard that renouncing many bodies does not equal the sūtra's merit, he grasped that this sūtra is the cause of bodhi; at the utmost peak of the profound, marvelous principle and Dharma joy, he was deeply moved and gave way to tears of sorrow. He thought: "Formerly, when I attained the true wisdom of the path of seeing and realized the unconditioned, though I was called possessor of the wisdom-eye, I had never heard such a rare dharma." This refers to the rareness of the dharma-door among the [seven] meanings. According to other recensions of the sūtra, below this there is further: "Why is this? The prajñāpāramitā spoken of by the Buddha is precisely non-prajñāpāramitā." This is the first of the seven meanings: the dharma-door. In the verse, "the supreme meaning, the shore of wisdom hard to fathom" explains this passage. "Why is this?" questions the reason for not having heard it. "The Buddha spoke of..." and below explains the reason for not having heard it. Because this shore of wisdom has two meanings, even with the wisdom-eye he had not heard it: first, because it is the superior, supreme meaning of the shore of wisdom, hence it says "the Buddha spoke of prajñāpāramitā"; second, because the shore of wisdom is hard to fathom, hence it says "is precisely non-prajñāpāramitā". Because of these two meanings it is distinctly different from other sūtras, so it is generally spoken of as the supreme dharma-door.
