Sūtra: World-Honoured One, [...] is not sufficient to be difficult. / Commentary: Next, this causes lesser bodhisattvas to generate shame and urge diligence. Within this there are two parts: first, encountering the Buddha's teaching at present, faithfully receiving it is not difficult; second, faithfully upholding it in the future is truly rare. This is the first. Because a class of bodhisattvas harbored indolence, to make them generate shame and urge diligence, he says that even in an evil age there will still be those who uphold and expound it, so how could one fail to arouse diligent vigor when the Buddha is present in an auspicious age? Intending to stir them so that shame arises and a mind of encouragement is produced, he says: "For me now to have faith-and-understanding, receive, and retain [it] is not sufficient to be difficult."
