The first two lines ask; the last two lines answer. “For” means “based on.” Based on what does the mind not abandon the notion of bodhi? Based on what does it give rise to the aspects of practice and cultivate them? Based on the perfection of forbearance [discerning] selflessness and the like, one is able to arouse the mind; also, through selflessness, one is able to cultivate practice and make the practice firm. This explains the meaning of the sūtra’s words “abandoning all marks, one should arouse the mind.”
