[Sūtra:] "Subhūti said to the Buddha: 'Bhagavat, will there be sentient beings who, hearing such spoken phrases, give rise to true faith?'" Below, the third doubt is resolved. This is named "the doubt that cause and effect are difficult to believe". In setting forth the doubt, the treatise says: "Earlier, relying on the pāramitās, non-abiding practice was taught, explaining the profound meaning of the cause in practicing giving; earlier, relying on the Tathāgata's non-conditioned essence, the profound meaning of the fruit was taught. If so, people of future evil ages will not give rise to a faithful mind. How could this not be taught in vain?" To resolve this doubt, the sūtra text has two parts: first, Subhūti's question of doubt; second, the Tathāgata's correct answer. This is the first part, the question. *Po* means "able to". Can there be those who can believe such a profound sūtra now in the true Dharma, and will people in future evil ages be able to give rise to true faith?
