[Sūtra:] "You should know that such a person has planted good roots not merely before one Buddha, two Buddhas, three, four, or five Buddhas, but has planted good roots before immeasurable hundreds of thousands of Buddhas." The subsequent text provides a distinct teaching. Within this there are two parts: first, explaining the cultivation of merit, and second, explaining the cultivation of wisdom. This passage is the first. Within it there are four parts: 1. explaining the cause of faith; 2. explaining the essence of faith; 3. explaining the conditions for faith; 4. explaining the accumulation of results. This is the first, the cause of faith. Saying "not merely before one Buddha, two Buddhas, three, four, or five Buddhas" shows that it is not small, distinguishing them from beginners. "Before immeasurable thousands of Buddhas" reveals that it is already vast, clearly noting that their faculties have matured. "Planted good roots" refers to burning incense, scattering flowers, reciting names, and praising virtues in the field of the Buddha, planting the three good roots such as non-greed.
