[Sūtra:] "If, on the other hand, there is a person who receives and upholds from this sūtra even as little as a four-line verse, and explains it to others, their merit surpasses the former." The second discerns the superior. Within the text there are four parts: 1. presentation, 2. inquiry, 3. explanation, 4. conclusion. This is the first. Although giving treasures may fill the trichiliocosm, because it is entirely the merit of stockpiling, being "much" is inferior. Upholding the sūtra down to a four-line verse is the merit of advancing, and is therefore called superior. "Receiving and upholding": "receiving" means accepting through hearing; "upholding" means maintaining without forgetting. One who receives and upholds causes oneself to become a Buddha; one who explains it to others causes others to become Buddhas. Benefiting oneself and benefiting others are both the work of bodhi. Therefore, that this merit surpasses the former is difficult to measure.
