The sūtra's 'Why is this? In the past when I…' up to 'would have given rise to anger and hatred' is the verification. It further clarifies the meaning of the absence of suffering. The dismemberment limb by limb was an extreme act of harm; not giving rise to anger or hatred shows that the power of endurance was fierce. Anger and hatred arise because of grasping at a self; since self-grasping is absent, from whom could anger and hatred arise? However, anger is a major affliction, while hatred is a minor entanglement. With a major affliction, one can retaliate with murderous intent; with a minor entanglement, one only inflicts painful suffering. Because anger possesses five meanings, it is called major; because hatred does not possess them, it is called minor, as explained in the treatise on mind.
