one does not understand the meaning of emptiness.) "Subhūti, when the Tathāgata says there is a self, there is no self; yet pṛthagjanas consider there to be a self." (Earlier he said, 'When I was with Dīpaṃkara Buddha,' which is speaking of there being a self. Yet it was only to instruct ordinary people in accordance with worldly convention, not that there is a self; it is not the same as pṛthagjanas clinging to the notion of a self.) "Subhūti, as for pṛthagjanas, the Tathāgata says that they are not pṛthagjanas." (Those who have not reached the middle way are called pṛthagjanas. Understanding the emptiness of prajñā, one then realizes equal enlightenment; therefore, they are not pṛthagjanas.) "Subhūti, what do you think? Can the Tathāgata be contemplated by means of the thirty-two marks?" (Riding upon suchness to realize enlightenment, there is no self; therefore, he should not be contemplated by means of the thirty-two marks.) Subhūti said: "So it is, so it is: the Tathāgata is to be contemplated by means of the thirty-two marks." (Pṛthagjanas seek the Buddha through marks.) The Buddha said: "Subhūti, if the Tathāgata were to be contemplated by means of the thirty-two marks, a cakravartin would be a Tathāgata." (If you see the Tathāgata through marks, a cakravartin also possesses these marks, and thus should be a Tathāgata. Since a cakravartin is not a Tathāgata, the Tathāgata should not be seen by means of the thirty-two marks.) Subhūti said to the Buddha: "Bhagavat, as I understand the meaning of what the Buddha has spoken, the Tathāgata should not be contemplated by means of the thirty-two marks." (Subhūti deeply penetrates dharma-nature; therefore, he does not form the understanding of a pṛthagjana.) At that time, the Bhagavat spoke a gāthā, saying: (Using a gāthā like a hymn, not the meaning of four lines.)
