Sūtra: Having finished his meal,
Commentary: The fourth is the conclusion of the event. Originally going to beg for food was to generate a field of merit; now, if he did not eat, the merit of giving would not be complete; hence he must eat the food. The Ratnamegha Sūtra states: whatever is obtained from begging is divided into four portions: one portion is intended for fellow practitioners of pure conduct; one portion is intended for poor and lowly beggars; one portion is to be given to beings of water and land; one portion is for oneself to eat. Furthermore, one offers food to the Buddhas and the assembly of worthy and noble ones, and only afterward eats oneself. When destroying [and consuming] the food, one should regard it generally as eating the flesh of one's child in the wilderness, wishing to attain the Dharma-body and depart from all faults, mindfulness of repaying the benefactor's kindness. Eating in this general manner, the Tathāgata ultimately does not eat, constantly having […] appearances; the Buddha accepts food, taking it to other regions like the food of Gandhahastin to perform Buddha-work through giving.
