Having explained the meaning of abiding, which is also called the essence, the Son of the Buddha next explains the name, which is also called the characteristics of the ground. In explaining the name there are two parts: first, explaining abundant joy in ten phrases; next, explaining by mindfulness of what joy arises in twenty phrases. As for explaining the ten phrases: the first, "joy," is general; the nine phrases below are particular joys. The Treatise Sūtra states that "abundant joy" is general, while the nine phrases from "abundant faith" onward are particular. Therein, having additionally added the phrase "leaping [joy]", the three phrases on essence, root, and state of mind explain abundant joy. The nine phrases are: (1) reverence-joy; (2) affection; (3) celebration; (4) pliability; (5) leaping joy; (6) endurance; (7) non-destruction; (8) non-vexation; (9) non-anger. Reverence is due to the Three Jewels; affection is the phrase on delighting in contemplating the purity of tathatā; celebration is the phrase on rejoicing upon measuring the excellence of what one has personally realized; pliability is the phrase on the fulfillment of pliability in pervading benefit to one's own body; leaping joy is because of the preeminence of the pervasive benefit to one's own body and mind—this is absent in the larger recension; endurance is the phrase on endurance upon seeing oneself near to bodhi; non-destruction is one's own mind being subdued and having no fondness for contention; non-vexation is through kindness and compassion being pliable and having no fondness for distressing others; non-anger is having no fondness for anger because of patience without anger. The older explanation states: among the eight, five accord with joy, while the lower three have no non-joyous matters through patience.
