From “Vajragarbha” onward is the second [section] within listing the assembly, listing the names. Because this bodhisattva is the foremost of those requesting the exposition in the fourth assembly, his name is listed first. The Treatise asks: “Why is it that only Vajragarbha speaks?” The explanation states: All afflictions are difficult to destroy, yet this Dharma can break them, its roots of goodness being solid and firm like a diamond (vajra); therefore, it is expounded under no different name. Why is he called Vajragarbha (Diamond Treasury)? “Garbha” (treasury) means firm, like the heartwood of a tree, or like an embryo in the womb; therefore it is called firm like a diamond. Among all roots of goodness, its power is supreme, like a diamond, able to generate the practice and roots of goodness of the paths of humans and devas, unable to be destroyed; hence he is named Vajragarbha. From here on, thirty-seven bodhisattvas are listed, their greatness immeasurable, their names explained in accordance with their virtues, lodged within the spoken realization. The introductory section has now been expounded.
