The one verse from here down is the fourth [part], urging the assembly to listen respectfully and demonstrating that he teaches well. "Single-mindedly, reverently waiting" has two aspects: 1) Physical reverence: "abiding in deportment" explains "reverence"; "being capable of receiving the exposition of Dharma" explains "waiting." 2) Mental reverence: resolving to seek the Dharma; hence it says, "as the mind is resolute"—this explains mental reverence; "being capable of retaining and bearing in mind" explains "waiting." The former is physical reverence capable of receiving; the latter is mental reverence capable of retaining. "Now, relying on the Buddha's power, I shall speak" shows that it is not by his own power, freeing him from overweening pride. The lower half manifests what is taught. "With what matter" means with a loud voice and tone; "what manner of matter" means putting forth causes and citing analogies; "relying on what matter" means relying on words without contradicting the meaning; "manifesting what matter" means manifesting the meaning of the grounds. Furthermore, it is explained: a loud voice and tone, causes and analogies, relying on the reasoning of realization to speak of the meaning without contradiction, and speaking in accordance with the reasoning of reality, can be understood. The character "well" in the Śāstra means skillful; hence it has two meanings: 1) skillfully adapting to others; 2) fully expressing the meaning, as should be understood from the Śāstra.
