Sūtra: Furthermore, [Mañjuśrī...] to [...] contending and litigating with one another. Fourth, curing division and discord. The text is divided into four: first, actively creating discord; second, raising corpses and sorcery; third, due to having heard the name in the past; fourth, all receiving the fulfilment of vows. Within the first text, it is divided into three: first, actively creating; second, mutually harming; third, relying on wrongdoing. This is the first. Regarding "fond of discord, contending and litigating with one another": among the three karmas, this is the vocal karma of malicious speech (paiśunya). The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya says: In the past, there were two ferocious beasts, one named Fine Tooth and the other named Fine Pounce. Day and night they followed one another, watching for and catching herds of deer. There was a jackal who followed behind the two beasts, eating their leftover meat to sustain his life. Then that jackal secretly thought to himself: "I cannot follow them for long. By what expedient means can I cause discord between the two beasts so that they no longer accompany one another?" At that time, that jackal went to Fine Tooth and spoke these words: "That tiger Fine Pounce said this: 'My birthplace, clan, form, colour, power, and strength surpass yours. Day after day I always obtain fine and delicious food, while that Fine Tooth constantly follows behind me, eating my leftover meat to sustain his life.'" He then spoke a verse: "'In form and colour, as well as birth, / Mighty in power and moreover superior; / Fine Tooth cannot be good'— / Thus spoke Fine Pounce." At that time, Fine Tooth asked the jackal: "How do you know this?" He replied: "When you gather together in one place and look at each other, you will know for yourself." After the jackal had spoken to Fine Tooth, he then went to Fine Pounce: "Do you know now? Fine Tooth said something," up to the verse: "'In form and colour, as well as birth, / Mighty in power and moreover superior; / Fine Pounce cannot be good'— / Thus spoke Fine Tooth." Having spoken these words, the two beasts gathered together in one place and looked at each other with angry eyes. Fine Tooth the lion then thought: "I should not fail to question him," and struck him first, then addressed Fine Pounce in verse: "'In form and colour, as well as birth, / Mighty in power and moreover superior; / Fine Tooth is not like me'— / Did Fine Pounce say this?" He replied: "Fine Pounce did not say this. / 'In form and colour, as well as birth, / Mighty in power and moreover superior; / Fine Tooth cannot be good.' / If one accepts unbeneficial words, / Believing another's gossip of this and that, / Intimate friends will naturally break apart, / And become enemies. / If having known the truth, / One should extinguish anger and affliction. / Now we should speak with utmost sincerity, / So that our bodies may attain benefit. / We should now properly subdue / And eliminate evil friends; / We should kill this jackal / Who sows discord between us."
