The third subsection, from 'Just as not...' downward, is given specifically as a simile for the two vehicles. The first two similes clarified that the two vehicles lack the virtue of the disciple; the latter simile clarifies that they lack the merit of the master. Whenever one wishes to retrieve a pearl, one must personally travel and wade through the great ocean. The śrāvaka does not enter the [great ocean of] saṃ[sāra... jewel; the] bodhisattva enters saṃsāra [... and] obtains the buddha fruit, hence it is said that he obtains the supreme jewel of knowledge.
