This chapter arises because of the empty room, constituting the fifth incident. Precisely because there were no objects in the room, Śāriputra gave rise to the thought of needing food. Vimalakīrti dispatched an illusory bodhisattva to request food from Fragrance Accumulation, extensively demonstrating the benefits in this sahā [world]. Because the coming of the acquired food originated from that Buddha, it is called the "Chapter on the Fragrance Accumulation Buddha." What is the general meaning of its coming from the empty room? Its purport is placed after the Chapter on the Dharma Door of Non-Duality: above, the dharma door of non-duality elucidated and clarified the essence of the ultimate truth; when the path of language is cut off and the locus of mental activity is extinguished, worldly feelings have nothing to attach to. It is necessary to explain having [phenomena], using food to lead people into the path and elevate the sentiments of beings.
