Within the transmission, the third is the Chapter on Entrustment. The reason it comes is to entrust [the sūtra] to Maitreya and Ānanda so that they will circulate it in the final era; therefore the Chapter on Entrustment comes. This Dharma is the Buddha's anxious burden; now I entrust my burden to you. Another explanation: entrusting this sūtra's Dharma to Maitreya is itself Maitreya's anxious burden; Maitreya personally shoulders this task with anxious care, hence it is called entrustment. Within this are two sections: first, from the beginning down to "do not let those who spy and seek find an opportunity," it specifically entrusts Maitreya; second, from "At that time the Buddha told Ānanda..." downward, it entrusts Ānanda.
