'The Buddha told Kāśyapa': this is his clan name, translated as 'Drinker of Light'. Drinker of Light was an ancient ṛṣi's name; this ṛṣi had radiant light on his body that could drink up all lights, causing them not to appear; hence it was taken as his name. This person belonged to the lineage of the ṛṣi Drinker of Light, so he took it as his name. Furthermore, his own body was golden and also had light. He belonged to a Brahmin clan in Rājagṛha, and his family was immensely wealthy. His wife was named Bhadrā Kāpileyī. In the past, at the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, this man was a sculptor of statues. At that time, a woman brought a gold bead and entrusted it to this sculptor to repair and make a Buddha statue. Due to this meritorious wholesomeness, they constantly encountered each other; now encountering the Buddha's appearance in the world, they became husband and wife again. Both had golden bodies, had no desires while in worldly life, and both went forth together and equally attained arhatship. While Kāśyapa was alive, he often sat opposite the Tathāgata to expound the Dharma. After the Buddha passed into extinction, the entire treasury of the Dharma was entrusted to Kāśyapa. Later, after Kāśyapa concluded the compilation of the Tripiṭaka, he went to Mount Kukkuṭapāda and entered the concentration of cessation of mind, his whole body not disintegrating. Later, when Maitreya Buddha appears in the world, he will press the mountain with his foot and emerge, performing eighteen transformations amid the great assembly and delivering countless people, and only then will his body be extinguished. When he attains buddhahood in the future, his name will be Raśmiprabhāsa. Among the disciples, he is foremost in dhūta practices. Because he lacked equal great compassion and possessed four faults, he was admonished. The four sections of text are the same as before.
