Fourth, reprimanding the non-universal mind, overturning the fault to reveal the gain. The class of ordinary people and the Lesser Vehicle lacks great compassion; the food they obtain cannot broadly succor others. Only wishing to nourish themselves, they have no mind for sentient beings; therefore he now teaches them that food has no fixed characteristics, its breadth or narrowness following the mind. Because the mind is small, it benefits only one body; because the mind is vast, it pervades ordinary and noble beings. If one can bestow it universally, then the blessings and benefits will be vast and manifold; how can one restrict one's mind and eat alone? Zhuang says: Food of the dharmadhātu has no duality between one and many; knowing that one is many, one bestows upon all with a single [portion of] food. "Only then may one eat": this single phrase concludes the whole. Those previously endowed with the four virtues may eat it, which reveals that those with faults are not fit to eat. Above, the teaching and reprimand are concluded.
