Starting from 'At that time, Vimalakīrti knew his thoughts': intending to fetch food, he first manifested the pure land. Within the text there are three: first, rebuking the thought of defiled food; second, starting from 'if you wish,' agreeing to fetch wonderful food; third, starting from 'Vimalakīrti entered samādhi,' properly manifesting the land as the condition for fetching food. In the first rebuke, 'Vimalakīrti knew his thoughts' means knowing his thinking; Vimalakīrti, using his paracittajñāna, remotely discerned his mind; hence it says 'knew his thoughts.' 'The Buddha taught the eight liberations, which you, benevolent one, have received and practiced': this cites the Dharma to rebuke him. Among the eight liberations, the first two liberations contemplate impurity. You have already received and practiced them; how could you think of impure, segmented food? Furthermore, liberation is desirelessness, and the food of Dharma is the supreme meal that nourishes the body. You have already received and practiced it; how could you instead think of impure food?
