"Then the two monks said, 'Supreme is such wisdom!' and so forth." This is the third part: praising Vimalakīrti's understanding as surpassing Upāli's; hence they say, "Supreme is such wisdom!" "Beyond the reach" shows that the inferior does not reach the superior, revealing that their wisdom could not attain to it. That the foremost observer of the vinaya could not explain it shows that he was surpassed in exposition. "[Upāli] replied, saying: 'Except for the Tathāgata, there is no śrāvaka or bodhisattva who can restrain his eloquence of delightful speech.'" This is the fourth part: deprecating himself to recount and praise [Vimalakīrti]. He confesses his own inadequacy: except for the Tathāgata, there is no follower of the two vehicles or bodhisattva who can surpass Vimalakīrti's eloquence, praising his superior eloquence; "Wisdom like this" praises his superior wisdom. "Then the two monks' doubts and regrets were immediately removed, and they made this vow: 'May all sentient beings attain such eloquence.'" This is the fifth part: obtaining benefit upon hearing the teaching. Within the benefits there are three: first, the obstacles of doubt, regret, and sin were eliminated; second, they generated the great aspiration, vowing to become buddhas; third, they gave rise to a vast vow, wishing that the wisdom and eloquence of sentient beings would equal their own. "Therefore, I [am not fit]" concludes that he was not equal to the task.
