At that time, Ānanda took the milk and offered it to the Buddha, recounting the above events in detail. The Buddha then prophesied: 'After their lives end, this mother cow and her calf will transmigrate back and forth seven times between the human and heavenly realms, and ultimately will never again be reborn in the three evil destinies. Later, the mother cow will encounter Maitreya Buddha and attain the fruit of an arhat; the calf will do the same. After twenty kalpas have passed, it will attain Buddhahood, named Tathāgata Milk Light.' Because of this event, Mayūri and the others gave rise to profound reverence and faith in the Buddha. Therefore it says, 'Currently practicing this dharma to deliver [sentient beings].' 'Take the milk and do not be ashamed': because this is necessary for transformation, there is no shame. Fifth, praising Vimalakīrti: this can be understood. 'Therefore' and so forth concludes his inability. 'Like this, the five hundred' and so forth is the third, the general conclusion; it illustrates the rest of the text, which is intelligible.
