In this chapter there are three approaches to the analysis: first, explaining the purpose of the chapter; second, explaining the chapter title; third, dividing the text to explain it. As for the first, the purpose, there are four meanings: first, the bodhisattvas of Sarvagandhasugandhā wished to return to their own land and requested the Dharma to enrich themselves; second, Vimalakīrti requested the Buddha's endorsement so that the sūtra-dharma would be established and circulated to future generations; third, the miraculous transformations displayed by Vimalakīrti were not seen at the Āmrapālī [grove], and the work of transformation was not complete; fourth, the fragrance of the food of Sarvagandhasugandhā was not yet known at the Āmrapālī [grove], and he wished to let them know it together. Due to these four meanings, the chapter comes about.
