Within this chapter, there are three sections of analysis: 1. Explaining the reason for its occurrence; 2. Explaining the chapter title; 3. Dividing the text and explaining it. First, as for the reason for its occurrence: The Buddha and Vimalakīrti taught the Dharma in four assemblies, and their transformation [of beings] was complete. Afterward, they set in motion great compassion to benefit future generations, wishing to transmit the light to illuminate the eternal night to the farthest, boundless reaches; therefore, this chapter follows. Second, as for clarifying the chapter title: "En-" (zhu) means to entrust; "-trustment" (lei) means to commit repeatedly. Now, with this sūtra and Dharma, he entrusts it to Maitreya, Ānanda, and others, wishing to have them transform those who have karmic affinity and broadly benefit all beings. The meaning is broad, while the words are concise, serious, and earnest: they must shoulder the Tathāgata's rare Dharma, so that those who should see and hear it will now receive this sūtra, read, recite, and uphold it; therefore, it is called "Entrustment." The text below fully explains this meaning, and hence it is called the "Chapter on Entrustment."
