The commentary explains: "Toiling" means being exhausted; "yielding" means being deferential. In practicing the bodhisattva path in this land, one must necessarily toil and endure all kinds of suffering; because there is much arrogance, one must necessarily be deferential. The Sahā world is here called the "land of endurance." Even the World-Honoured One, after six years of ascetic practice and having attained Buddhahood, still had to endure the ten kinds of residual karmic retribution—such as the spear of acacia wood and the horse barley—as is explained elsewhere.
