"To those who went, Vimalakīrti expounded the Dharma at length on the occasion of his bodily illness." This third [part] explains the expounding of the Dharma on the occasion of his illness, which has two sections: first, urging revulsion toward the mortal body; and second, urging the seeking of the Buddha's body. The former section again has two parts: first, clarifying the correct contemplation based on ultimate principle; and second, analyzing the counteractive contemplation based on phenomenal matters. This is the general heading. Sengzhao states: "Those who are like oneself are easy to convince; those who differ from oneself are difficult to win over. Therefore, on the occasion of his bodily illness, he clarified the perils of possessing a body." Kumārajīva states: "He wished to clarify that even a body treading the path cannot escape this affliction; how much less can someone without virtue expect to preserve it?"
