“Mindfulness, concentration, dhāraṇī, and eloquence uninterrupted”: Below, the second part praises the virtue of wisdom, which also has three parts; this first is the general praise. Zhao says: “Mindfulness is right mindfulness. Concentration is right concentration. Dhāraṇī (retention) retains the good without losing it, and prevents evil from arising, with nothing leaking away; mindfulness is called dhāraṇī. Eloquence refers to the seven eloquences. The Great Treatise says: first, swift eloquence; second, sharp eloquence; third, inexhaustible eloquence; fourth, uninterrupted eloquence; fifth, appropriate eloquence; sixth, meaningful eloquence; seventh, worldly supreme eloquence. These four are essential utilities for mahāsattvas, so they are constantly uninterrupted.” Rui says: “When mindfulness is not forgotten, wisdom increases all the more. When concentration is not abandoned, the mind is constantly unified. When retaining the good without loss, one has strong memory and evil does not arise. When eloquence does not cease, teaching is unimpeded. Being equipped with these four gates can direct the myriad practices; hence it is stated thus.” Shi says: “When bodhisattvas attain these four dharmas, they enter deeply and firmly into them; passing through lifetimes, they do not lose them, and over kalpas, they become all the brighter; hence it says ‘uninterrupted.’”
