"'If Subhūti does not sever lust, anger, and delusion, nor dwell together with them;" Below, the second part clarifies the equality of defilement and purity, in three parts: first, inquiring in terms of the unarisen Four Truths; second, inquiring with respect to ordinary beings and sages; third, concluding that [the food] may be taken. The first text has four clauses. This first one understands afflictions as unarisen, which is the truth of origin. Sengzhao says: Severing lust, anger, and delusion belongs to the śrāvakas; dwelling together with lust, anger, and delusion belongs to ordinary beings. The Great Being contemplates lust, anger, and delusion as being none other than nirvāṇa, hence neither severing nor dwelling together with them. If one can be like this, only then may one take the food.
