"'and if, you having attained the samādhi of non-contention, all sentient beings also attain this concentration;" Below clarifies that merit is not of a beneficial nature. In the wonderful dhyāna of the Dharma-nature, concentration and distraction share a single purport; between Shanji and the multitude of beings there cannot be duality, just as suchness is non-dual. Thus sins and blessings have no owner: whose blessing is not a blessing, and who falls or does not fall? Therefore the sūtra says: "Neither a field of merit nor not a field of merit; neither worthy of offerings nor not worthy of offerings." Sengzhao says: The nature of Shanji and the multitude of beings is always naturally one; why should Shanji alone attain it while the multitude of beings does not? This clarifies that originally there is no partiality.
