"He answered: 'The straight mind is the bodhimaṇḍa, because it is without falsehood.'" Below, thirty lines extensively clarify the bodhimaṇḍa in terms of various dharmas. This first part distinguishes it in terms of the mind. Sengzhao says: The realm of cultivating the mind, progressing on the path, and being undisturbed is indeed the bodhimaṇḍa. If one can designate the mind as the master and myriad practices as the site, without leaving the square inch the path is naturally cultivated—this is the true bodhimaṇḍa. Why abandon the quiet realm nearby to seek an empty plot far away? 'Straight mind' means that the internal mind is true and upright, externally free of falsehood. This is the fundamental altar that grounds the myriad practices, the site for advancing on the path. From here below, all practices are fully listed; all are quiet grounds for cultivating the mind, tranquil sites for propagating the path. Another explanation: Just as in the world wheat mixed with chaff is brought to the threshing floor and beaten, so that the chaff is removed and the wheat preserved, the cultivation of the path is also like this. The pure essence of Buddha-nature is mixed with the chaff of afflictions. The practitioner takes the correct view of the true mark as the threshing floor, the myriad practices of counteraction as the threshing, and severing delusions and realizing truth as the winnowing and sifting. For example, the straight mind takes falsehood as its chaff; giving takes stinginess and greed as its chaff. All lines are known by this analogy.
