Thereupon Śāriputra thought to himself, “The mealtime approaches. Where shall these sons of the devas and bodhisattvas eat?”
This [chapter] is the second, “Roamings Across Both Pure and Impure,” which clarifies the application of the middle way. For Gandhahastin and Śākyamuni, the dharmakāya is equal, but in responding to beings' conditions they differ, so pure and impure are distinct. The chapter text has three parts: first, taking conditions to think of food; second, mutually roaming in pure and impure [lands]; third, hearing the chapter and gaining benefit. The first section has three parts: first, the thought; next, the rebuke; last, the permission. This is the initial thought. [Kumāra]jīva says: “That Śāriputra alone gave rise to this thought has three purposes: first, the body of defilements and karma cannot yet be without sustenance; second, renouncing concern for the Great Method, he delights in the Dharma without attachment; third, projecting his own dependence, he assumed the assembly was likewise. Occupying the foremost position among disciples, it was appropriate for him to procure an offering for the assembly.”
