2.402

佛告阿難。勿起退意。所以者何。我說汝於聲聞中為最多聞。非謂菩薩　二佛慰也。肇曰。物有於上不足。於下有餘。不可以於下有餘而置於上也。

The Buddha told Ānanda: "Do not give rise to thoughts of retreat. Why is this? I said that among śrāvakas you are foremost in learning, not among bodhisattvas." The second part is the Buddha comforting him. Sengzhao says: "Things may be deficient in what is superior, yet have a surplus in what is inferior. One cannot, because of having a surplus in what is inferior, place oneself in the superior rank."
