"What is sympathetic joy?" He replied: "Whenever there is benefit, to rejoice without regret." The third [part] asks and answers about sympathetic joy. Sengzhao says: "Having personally attained the benefit of the Dharma, one rejoices together with the assembly. When both the other and oneself obtain the delight of the Dharma, it is called joy." "What is equanimity?" He replied: "Having no expectations regarding the blessings and merit one produces." The fourth [part] asks and answers about equanimity. Sengzhao says: "From the austere practices of great compassion, grief is born. From the joyful practices of benevolence and sympathetic joy, pleasure is born. Once grief and pleasure are displayed, attachment and aversion arise subtly. Therefore, the practitioner relinquishes the practices of suffering and pleasure, contemplating sentient beings with impartiality. In the correct equanimity of the Mahāyāna, both practice and retribution are forgotten, and hence there is no expectation. The three equals are all signless and objectless, proceeding together with benevolence; since the practice of benevolence is complete, by analogy one may know [these as well]."
