"He turned the Dharma wheel thrice in the great trichiliocosm; / That wheel was originally always pure." These two [lines] clarify his going to the Deer Park to turn the Dharma wheel. Because once the path was accomplished he immediately transformed beings, he next spoke the Dharma. The text has two parts: this first clarifies the turning of the Dharma [wheel]. "Turned thrice" refers to the turn of demonstrating the marks, the turn of urging cultivation, and the turn of adducing realization. That is, first demonstrating the marks of the phenomena of the four truths; next urging the cultivation and practice of these four truths; and further saying 'I have already attained realization,' causing them to believe and accept. The "great trichiliocosm" is the Buddha's single transformation realm. Sengzhao says: "The Dharma wheel is ever pure, like empty space. Although past and present differ, and times move and customs change, the sage transmits to the sage, and his path does not alter."
