"The four means of embracing are the bodhisattva's pure land; when the bodhisattva attains buddhahood, sentient beings embraced by liberation come to be born in his land." Sengzhao says: "Embracing sentient beings through four matters constitutes the four means of embracing: first, giving, offering wealth and Dharma according to what they require; second, affectionate speech, speaking gentle words according to what suits them; third, beneficial conduct, providing skillful benefit according to what benefits them; fourth, working together, meeting evil by joining them to save them from evil, and meeting good by joining them to advance their good. The bodhisattva uses these to liberate beings from birth and death, embracing them in a way unlike ordinary people who bind each other through affection, fame, profit, royal laws, and the like."
