Thereupon the Buddha pressed the earth with his toe, and immediately the great trichiliocosm was adorned with hundreds of thousands of jewels, just like the Jewel-Adorned Land of immeasurable jewel-adorned merits of the Buddha Jewel-Adornment. The entire great assembly praised it as unprecedented, and each saw himself seated upon a jewelled lotus flower. This third [part] explains the Tathāgata manifesting the purity, in four sections. This first part, manifesting the purity by pressing with his toe, consists of manifesting the purity, comparing the purity, and the assembly seeing it. Previously, the Buddha answered the two questions, Śāriputra gave rise to doubt, and the Brahmā King opened the discussion; since the assembly still did not understand, he provisionally manifested a transformation so that they might know that purity and defilement are not fixed, returning from the provisional and awakening to the real. Daosheng says: "He manifested this transformation to show the lack of a fixed characteristic, thereby dispelling the attachment to defilement and enabling them to grasp the purport that it is pure." Sengzhao says: "The Jewel-Adorned Land is the foremost of pure lands, so it is used as an analogy. That they saw themselves seated on flowers is easy to understand."
