“Deeply penetrating dependent origination, severing all deviant views, having no remaining latent habituations regarding the two extremes of existence and non-existence”: Third, the explanation. Ordinary people do not understand arising through conditions, and therefore grasp at causelessness or deviant causes; the two vehicles do not understand the cessation of conditions, and therefore remain stagnant in nirvāṇa. Neither is deep. Bodhisattvas awaken to arising as non-arising, and realize cessation as non-cessation, causing latent habituations to be completely destroyed; hence it is called ‘deeply penetrating’. Therefore the sūtra says: ‘There is no ignorance, nor is there an exhaustion of ignorance.’ Zhao says: “‘Deeply penetrating’ refers to the deep understanding of wisdom. When one understands that dharmas arise from conditions, deviant views have no way to arise. The two views of existence and non-existence mislead the deluded multitude; the mahāsattvas have long exhausted them, so there are no remaining latent habituations.”
