"Thoroughly understanding the profound and subtle meanings of all dharmas, skillfully knowing the destinations of sentient beings coming and going, as well as the workings of their minds." From here down is the second [part], explaining the reason they are able to guide, which is because they possess expedient means and wisdom. With wisdom they penetrate the profound meanings and can abide in bodhi; with expedient means they realize that sentient beings' coming and going are like illusions. That is why they compassionately benefit sentient beings while things cannot burden the virtue of these mahāsattvas; it lies herein. Hence the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says: 'Wisdom does not apprehend existence or non-existence, yet gives rise to a mind of great compassion.'
