He replied, "One who sees the unconditioned and enters the correct position can no longer generate the aspiration for anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi." Fourth, the explanation. The text has three parts: first, the doctrine; next, the parables; last, the conclusion. This is the first. Since the nature of afflictions is precisely the nature of bodhi, and yet those of the two vehicles sever afflictions and see the unconditioned, falsely resting in the bliss of nirvāṇa, they thereby transgress against the great aspiration. Ordinary beings, pressed by saṃsāra, have a fierce aspiration for the superior, and thus are able to generate the great resolve. [Dao]sheng says: "To explain it with present facts: those who see the unconditioned and enter the correct position have severed the fetters from [the stage of] suffering-forbearance and above. Having arrived at where they began, they take it as seeing it; because originally they wished to abandon saṃsāra to seek awakening, their awakening lies outside of saṃsāra. There is no longer the principle of awakening directly without abandoning [saṃsāra]; therefore, they can no longer generate the bodhicitta."
