Thereupon Vimalakīrti replied in verse, saying:
"The perfection of wisdom is the mother of the bodhisattva,
And upāya is the father;
Of the teachers of all the multitudes of the path,
There is none who is not born from these." There are forty-two verses of reply, with four sections in the text: first, four verses clarify the retinue; second, seven verses clarify the provisions for life; third, twenty-eight verses clarify the activities and functions; fourth, three verses conclude with exhortation. This is the first. Having correct wisdom within and expedient means without, the dharmakāya is born. Zhao says: "Wisdom is internal illumination; expediency is external function. They are that from which the myriad practices are born, and that from which all Buddhas emerge; therefore, the bodhisattva takes wisdom as mother and expediency as father."
