The Bodhisattva Prabhāketu said, "The difference among the four elements and the difference of the space element constitute duality. The nature of the four elements is itself the nature of the space element. Just as the past and future limits are empty, the intermediate limit is also empty. If one can know the nature of the elements in this way, this is entering the dharma gate of non-duality."
Sengzhao says, "The four elements are the four great elements; the space element is the great element of space. Because the five aggregates arise from these, they are called elements. However, the abiding of these four great elements has no past, future, or intermediate state, and is no different from the great element of space." Another explanation says, "The Hīnayāna considers the natures of the four great elements—solidity, moisture, and warmth—to be different from the space element. The Mahāyāna Laṅkāvatāra holds that the four great elements are false conceptualizations; since their nature is false and lacks self-nature, they are not different from space."
