"This is establishing precepts, this is keeping precepts, and this is breaking precepts. This is what ought to be done, and this is what ought not to be done. This is an obstruction, and this is not an obstruction. This is incurring an offense, and this is being freed from an offense." (From here down, the two vehicles are explained together, the text being divided into three trainings. This is the first, the training in morality. Regarding 'establishing precepts', Sengzhao says: "As explained in the Vinaya treatises, it refers to formulating precepts in response to specific events. Conforming to the transmission is called keeping; violating it is called breaking. Because of exceptions, it ought to be done; because of prohibitions, it ought not to be done. Precepts of intrinsic nature obstruct the Way; regulatory prohibitions do not obstruct the precepts. Transgressions with a particularly grave mind cause obstruction; those with a light mind do not obstruct. Without repentance, one incurs an offense; by repenting, one is freed from an offense.")
