"Benefiting sentient beings without expecting reward; suffering all afflictions in place of all sentient beings; and dedicating whatever merits one has entirely to them." / Zhao says: "The bodhisattva suffers on their behalf without consideration for their own person, bestowing all merits entirely on sentient beings. How could they, for benefiting them, think of any reward? Were it not for sentient beings, they would have long since entered nirvāṇa. Suffering for them to bring about their prior deliverance—they depart while I remain, which is no small substitution. What could surpass such utmost beneficence? This is the first dharma."
