"At that time the World-Honoured One asked Vimalakīrti: 'You wish to see the Tathāgata; in what way do you view the Tathāgata?'" This is the second section of this chapter, revealing Jingming's body and land to verify the sūtra. When a person possesses superior virtue, their words must be true and fitting; hence they are sealed and confirmed. The text has three parts: first, explaining the true body and true land; second, explaining the response body and response land; third, wishing to hear the sūtra, which speaks of benefit. The first part has two sections; this is the first, the question. Previously, when Mañjuśrī entered the room, he discussed it in terms of non-coming; when Śāriputra sought the sūtra, he instructed him in terms of non-seeking. Now, Jingming's seeing the Buddha sees him in non-seeing. All of these mean that when converging with reality, words cease, yet when marks are tranquil and guiding beings, they manifest coming and going. Furthermore, beginners in the two vehicles all see marks and traces, so he takes the opportunity to instruct them. Zhao says: "Earlier, he bade Mañjuśrī come together to see the Buddha; although raising their eyes and following worldly convention, their manners of viewing were different. The Tathāgata anticipated his intent, and wishing to reveal the purpose of his coming to view, in order to clarify the inconceivable Way of Buddha-activities, he asked while already knowing."
