'How much more so if they practice as spoken! Such a person will close all evil destinies and open all gates of goodness; they will constantly be protected and remembered by the Buddhas, subdue non-Buddhist learners, destroy the foes of Māra, cultivate bodhi, abide peacefully in the bodhimaṇḍa, and tread in the footsteps of what the Tathāgata has walked.' This is second, praising practice. A single thought of practice closes the evil destinies of the eight difficulties and opens the gates of goodness of the five vehicles. If practice corresponds, it is fitting for the Buddhas to protect it; if cultivation is correct, external demons are subdued. Following the Buddha's principle is called cultivating bodhi; not wavering in this mind, one will surely rest peacefully beneath the bodhi tree. The supreme fruit of Buddhahood takes the mind of faith as its root; the myriad practices of bodhi take a single thought as their step. Therefore, beginning with a single thought of practice is itself treading in the footsteps of what the Tathāgata has walked.
