The Buddha told the Lord of Devas: 'In the past, immeasurable asaṃkhyeya kalpas ago, at that time there was a Buddha named Bhaiṣajyarāja Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, Vidyācaraṇasampanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara, Puruṣadamyasārathi, Śāstādevamanuṣyāṇām, Buddha, Bhagavat. His world was called Mahāvyūha, his kalpa called Vyūha. The Buddha's lifespan was twenty small kalpas. His saṅgha of śrāvakas numbered thirty-six hundred million nayutas, and his saṅgha of bodhisattvas numbered twelve hundred million.' From here down is third, explaining the retribution for propagating and protecting: I was Candrachattra and protected the Dharma, attaining Buddhahood; the retribution for what the Lord of Devas vows can be known from this. The text has four parts: first, explaining that there was a Buddha; second, explaining the offerings; third, the concluding synthesis; fourth, encouraging practice. This first explains that at that time there was a Buddha. Bhaiṣajyarāja is his specific name; Tathāgata and the others are the ten common titles. 1. Tathāgata: because he comes riding the principle of true thusness to realize correct awakening. 2. Arhat (Worthy of Offerings): because he destroys demons and saves beings, deserving offerings. 3. Samyaksambuddha (Correct and Universal Knowledge): because he correctly realizes all dharmas without inversion. 4. Vidyācaraṇasampanna (Sufficiency in Clarity and Conduct): because his myriad practices are perfected, reaching the fruit of the three clarities. 5. Sugata: gata means gone; because he goes straight to bodhi without retrogressing. 6. Lokavid (Knower of the World): because through great compassion and expedient wisdom he understands the world. 7. Anuttara (Unsurpassed): because his virtuous deeds are supreme, with none able to surpass him. 8. Puruṣadamyasārathi (Tamer of Persons): because those who receive transformation and are subdued are all worthy persons. 9. Śāstādevamanuṣyāṇām (Teacher of Gods and Humans): although he models the six realms, his benefits to gods and humans are greatest. 10. Buddha: buddha means awakened; because during the long night of birth and death he awakens himself and awakens others. The remaining kalpa name, retinue, and so forth are evident.
