2.29
The previous chapter praised the truth of the Dharma and its great benefit; therefore, this chapter earnestly entrusts it. The two dharmas of new learners: one is slandering the Dharma, the other is slighting the master. Respecting the master is venerating the Dharma; venerating the Dharma is practicing it. If one practices, one severs delusion and becomes a sage. Inferring from this: although it is called respecting the master, it actually becomes respecting oneself. Yet new learners look down on the master and slight the Dharma, blocking their own path of advancement and seeking. The two dharmas of earlier learners: first, deceiving others; second, distorting the Dharma. If one exhausts the errors of new learners, the undertaking of benefiting others can be accomplished; if one focuses exclusively on the true mark, the achievement of saving oneself will be successfully realized. How regrettable that looking down on others loses loving-kindness and wisdom, and distorting the truth gets bogged down in views of reality! However, this admonition is the utmost of warnings. May all who participate in advancing and seeking inscribe it upon their hearts and bellies.
