"Then the Buddhas of the ten directions each extend their right hand and rub the practitioner's head, speaking these words: 'Well done, well done, good son! Because you chant and recite the Mahāyāna sūtras, the Buddhas of the ten directions expound the method of repentance. In the practice of a bodhisattva, one does not cut off the fetters, nor does one abide in the ocean of fetters. Contemplate the mind as having no mind, arising from inverted thoughts; such thought-minds arise from false thoughts, like the wind in the sky having no dwelling place. Such characteristics of dharmas neither arise nor cease. What is sin? What is merit? My own mind is inherently empty; sin and merit have no master. All dharmas are like this: without abiding and without destruction. Repenting like this is contemplating the mind as having no mind, and dharmas as not abiding in dharmas; all dharmas are liberated, the noble truth of cessation is tranquil. One who contemplates like this performs what is called the Great Repentance, the Adorned Repentance, the Repentance Free of the Marks of Sin, and the Destruction of Mind and Consciousness. One who practices this repentance is pure in body and mind and does not abide in dharmas—just like flowing water—and from thought to thought is able to see Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and the Buddhas of the ten directions.'
